Sudden Departure EP'Sudden Departure' by beans. is a short EP about the world's best TV series - 'The Leftovers' by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta. It portrays the struggles of several individuals after an unexplicable vanishing of 2% of the world's population. To the artist, this sudden departure is a metaphor for all the inexplicabilities in our human lives, nature and the universe. In their pursuit to find purpose and happiness in their lives, the characters take radical measures. Some people try to continue their normal lives but break eventually, others seek answers in religion or cults. After a long struggle, they eventually realize that they have been so distracted and consumed by their own personal agendas that they have missed what is truely important to them and already existed in their lives. In conclusion, the enduring search for a meaning to life, a battle between science and faith if you wish, has to be settled by each person individually. There is no Morgan Freeman that randomly appears to give you the answers to all your questions.
Musically, the songs are defined by a driving bass that is being supported by djenty-distorted guitars. On top, one finds layered and polyphonic clean vocals that are heavily processed. Polyrythmic grooves and odd meters are always used to inspire head-bopping - never for the sake of being progressive. |
The use of recurring themes and mostly the same minor key make the EP feel like one excessively long song that tells one coherent story. Overall, the harmonies and melodies are kept accessible with subtle variations to what is standard. For example in part 2, there is an additional blue note to create tension in the melody, which in the end is resolved to the original theme from part 1. Highlighting and supporting different melodies, there is a whole arsenal of additions from classical instruments such as Trumpet, Trombone or Violin to digital sounds from synthesizers. To give reference and context to the story, there are clips of Radio chatter talking about events in the world of 'The Leftovers' like the sudden departure itself, the rise of a faith healer called 'Holy Wayne' and more.
The genre is best-described by Alternative or Progressive Rock. Fans of Tool, A Perfect Circle or Tesseract will find their pieces to enjoy.

About beans.
HI, I'M BEANS.
I like playing drums, guitar and singing. 'beans.' is my one-man do-it-yourself musical endeavour where I do everything from songwriting, recording, audio/video production and artwork myself in my free time. In real life, I'm a physicist. MUSICAL INFLUENCES My main influences are TesseracT, Tool and The Contortionist. I like dramatic, atmospheric and melancholic sounds, but I am generally open to all genres from Pop to Hip-Hop to Electronic Music to Rock/Metal. The sole exception in that spectrum is Reggae. I hate Reggae. PRODUCTION Everything you hear or see was created on my laptop in my bedroom with mostly free, trial or open-source software. Except for drums, I am self-taught by means of this great new thing that is the interwebs. |
